Aussies - is there an open season on Roos?

At the boarding school I went to as a youth, we would have dances with our sister school in town, and as there were always more budding scholars at the girl's school than there were at our boy's school, kangaroos provided substitute dates, lest any young lady suffer the shame of embarrment of arriving at the dance unattended. The girls with the kangaroo dates never looked happy in the pictures taken at the dances, though.
