Why is islam so strict about not drawing mohammed?

The original idea was to avoid having Muslims begin to worship Mohammed like the Christians worshiped Jesus. For some reason, fundamentalists have taken this to the extreme and freak out if anyone draws a picture--even a completely innocuous one--of Mohammed. You're quite right; there's no justification for their overreaction when non-Muslims do it.
